LINWOOD COMMUNITY COUNCIL
 
Minutes of the meeting of Linwood Community Council held in the Tweedie Hall, Linwood, on Tuesday 17 June 2008 at 7.30 pm.
 
Community Councillors Attending:
P. Costello, I. Johnstone, J. Melville, J. Taylor, I. Wilson.
Apologies:
Councillors Anne Hall, Audrey Doig and David Clews.
Also Attending:
Community Constable C. Butler. Ms. J. McCulloch Linstone Housing Association also G. Sutherland, J, Laing,
 
Chair: Mr. J. Taylor Presided.
 
 
Police Report.
Constable Butler reported that 69 crimes committed in Linwood during the previous month had been recorded by the police of which 31 had resulted in “detections” which was similar to those recorded in the same period last year.
These included 3 housebreakings, ( 2 homes and 1 bar ) 3 serious assaults, 5 thefts of motor vehicles and 1 attempted theft of motor vehicle, 13 incidents of vandalism including the breaking of windows at the Community Education Centre and 5 cases of drinking in public.
He also reported on police action in stopping vehicles to detect road worthiness and to gather intelligence.
He also referred to the current situation where students from St. Benedict’s High School and Linwood High School are engaging in “fisticuffs” on the cycle path during their lunch breaks
 
Inspector Lang introduced himself and outlined the current attitude of the police and their policies in respect of the current crime scene and the future of community policing which he described as a key feature of police work.
He referred to the new co-response group and new shift patterns which gives the possibility of response on a 24/7 basis,
He also indicated that the current re-organisation of force structure has reduced the number of officers available and fewer community police, and that there is a need for 1500 more officers. In response to which there is a current policy of reducing senior posts in the force thereby freeing up posts for policing on the street.
He also referred to the continuing reduction in crimes including crimes of violence, robberies and motor vehicle offences.
 
Linstone H.A. Report.
Ms McCulloch informed the council on the association’s installation of new kitchens and bathrooms for tenants, the current programme to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the founding of Linstone and that the association is offering grants to local projects in respect of this.
 
Minutes of Previous Meeting:
The minutes of the previous General Meeting of Tuesday 20 May 2008, were presented and approved of as being a correct record of proceedings at that meeting on the motion of I Johnstone, seconded by J. Melville
 
 
Matters Arising from the Minutes.
The secretary indicated that he had communicated the feelings of the group regarding alternative use of the Morton Nursery site and aircraft noise to the appropriate authorities.
 
Treasurers Report.
The Treasurer being unable to attend his report of the current state of the council’s finances was continued till the next meeting.
 
Planning Applications.
The secretary presented the lists of current planning applications and supplied details of those relevant to Linwood.
Following detailed discussion the council found no reason to object to any of these.
 
Street Trading Licences
It was agreed not to oppose the applications for renewal of street trading licences presented.
 
Public Processions.
The secretary presented a list of applications for processions and marches throughout Renfrewshire and no objections were raised to these.
 
Other Competent Business.
Ms Melville reported on her attendance at the local neighbourhood forum, reporting that Renfrewshire Council will make a sum of £50 available to reimburse expenses incurred by representatives attending meetings of the forum and that the forum had made a number of grants including one to the Young Scots Club.
She also suggested that the community council should be more proactive in seeking new members and in other community activities and it this agreed that she would explore this.
Closure:
This being all the business the meeting closed, the date of the next meeting, being set for Tuesday 15 July 2008 at 7.30 pm. The committee to meet at 7.00 pm on that date.
